The synergy of Vitamin C and Zinc is among the most useful and safest natural aids for seasonal colds. Vitamin C is commonly used for the prevention and treatment of the common cold to help reduce its duration and severity. Zinc has been shown to inhibit viral replication, thereby preventing disease progression and reducing symptoms. This mineral also has an affinity for the receptor to which rhinoviruses (responsible for most flu-like illnesses) bind to infect respiratory tract cells. By binding to the receptor, or to the rhinovirus–receptor complex, Zinc may prevent infection of the nasal epithelium, thereby blocking the onset of the common cold.
